"Nygard demonstrates affection for his subjects. Young Gabriel Koerner, a 14-year-old Californian, is ecstatic over his new 'Trek' uniform, which he plans to wear to a convention. He also is enthusiastic about 'Star Trek' collectibles, about which he displays a startling knowledge of minutiae. He is, in other words, easy to laugh at. But when he displays some computerized special effects he has designed for a 'Star Trek' script his club is working on, the work is startlingly impressive. Whatever else he may be, Gabriel is a talented young man. It is the occasional glimpse of this type of depth that makes 'Trekkies' a good film. Gabriel and his fellow 'Trekkies' are having fun, and they're not ashamed of it. In the end, some of these rabid 'Star Trek' fans have an impressive sort of dignity. The rest are, at worst, nothing short of hilarious to watch."
