The Ottawa Citizen, Jamie Portman,
"...isn't all this carrying the Star Trek obsession to abnormal extremes? 'Who's to say who's normal?' retorts film-maker Roger Nygard, who examines the Star Trek phenomenon in his new feature-length documentary, Trekkies. Nygard insists that his study of the weird and wonderful world of Star Trek fans is not some kind of freak show and quotes actor Brent Spiner, who plays Data in the Next Generation series. 'I've never met anyone, Star Trek fan or otherwise, who wasn't peculiar,' Spiner once said. 'We're all peculiar.'" ... 'When human beings become obsessed with something, it becomes very funny,' Nygard says. 'The more serious the obsession gets, the funnier it gets when you take a step back and look at it. Yet, there are certainly worse things to be obsessed about than with improving the future of mankind --which is the philosophy behind Star Trek and the one that fans take away from it. You see some very unusual people in this movie. The thing about Star Trek fans is that they know they're unusual, but they flaunt it and enjoy the attention that comes from it. They actually call the non-Trek fans 'The Mundanes.''"
