Mr. Showbiz Web Page Movie Review, Cody Clark,
"You should be able to both grasp and enjoy 'Trekkies' whether or not you regularly beam up to 'Trek' conventions wearing pointed ears and full Starfleet regalia. The entire experience is beautifully cued by an epigraph informing viewers that "Trekkies" are the only fans referenced by name in the Oxford English Dictionary. It's a nifty little head-shaker and one can't help but ask oneself, What is it about 'Star Trek'? That's a question director Roger Nygard's winning, absorbing documentary is perfectly equipped to answer. ... The film's only deficiency in this regard is the noticeable absence of the captains from the various series: only 'Voyager''s Kate Mulgrew and the original 'Trek''s William Shatner even show up, and only Mulgrew consented to be interviewed. ... What really gives 'Trekkies' juice, though, is the fans themselves. These folks are truly a worthy subject for a documentary, and Nygard and Crosby essentially allow them to tell their own stories. ... A few seem genuinely in need of professional psychotherapy, but most are ordinary, level-headed citizens who happen to be especially passionate about their escapism. ... There's no overt attempt to draw meaning out of all this, but 'Trekkies' will make you think about 'Star Trek' fans in particular, and fandom in general; and that's a refreshing sensation coming from any kind of movie. If you wouldn't be caught dead at a 'Star Trek' convention (or any other kind of convention), but you've always sort of wondered what goes on behind closed doors, beam, don't walk, to your local multiplex. And be sure you stick around after the credits roll; the priceless outtakes of 'Trek'-themed standup routines alone are worth the price of admission."
