As someone who has been a Trek fan since the early days of classic Trek, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed "Trekkies". It opened at our local cineplex (in Ottawa, Canada) last night; we had originally intended to see The Phantom Menace (which was playing in three of the building's 12 theatres), but got turned off by the lineups. We definitely made the right decision.
Although some critics have argued that the film makes fun of Trek fandom, I could not disagree more. It portrays fandom as something wonderful and joyous, and fans as friendly, open-minded and fascinating people. Seeing it made me feel as if I had just been through a 3-day con instead of a 90-minute movie. And the interviews with the stars were great - tell Nichelle she looked terrific!
I only had two regrets: 1) That two of my favourites, Marina Sirtis & Nana Visitor, weren't included and 2) That my husband & I were two of only four people in the audience....everyone else was following the adventures of Anakin Skywalker et al.
Congratulations on a terrific job and a fitting tribute to Gene's memory. Hope to see "Trekkies" on the nomination list for "Best feature documentary" at next year's Oscars. Donna Balkan Constance Bay, Ontario
P.S. I hope there will be
lots of nasty letters to People Magazine. Their review was downright offensive.
