Dear Gentlemen:
Saw your AFI screening today and want to say something about the rather self-effacing comments made at the screening by "Gabriel," the teen Trekker featured in your film. First off (and perhaps you should convey this to him) he was hardly "grating and annoying" as he found himself to be onscreen; he was charismatic, funny, and delightful to watch. I can see why you chose to use his footage; he has a strong presence that translates very well to film. Simply adorable!
However, his apparent lack of self-esteem got me remembering times when I was on the social fringes of fandom..... I also remember hearing about the dark underbelly of fandom.....
If you chose to make a sequel Ðthough I'm sure you could continue in the same hopeful, light-hearted vein of "Trekkies" for hoursÐ I would be interested in seeing more of the *psychology* of Trekdom, not just the *phenomenon.* Exploring the shadow side of this fantasy world might be very powerful, and perhaps (as it so often is when we bravely explore the darkness) enlightening.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Trekkies" and I wish you the best of luck in finding further distribution.
Sincerely,
j.m brin
