Review of "TREKKIES" 10-22-97

by Daryl G. Frazetti

As a whole, Trekkies is a fun and informative film covering the fandom that exists in the world of STAR TREK. What makes Trekkies unique from the array of Trek videos that have been available over the years is the fact that it focuses on, and features, the fans. Yes, the actors are involved, but they too concern themselves with what their fans have meant to them, as well as some of the ways in which they have been affected and touched by them.

One will note heartwarming remarks shared by: Jimmy Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, and Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. There is also included a much appreciated look at William Shatner preparing for his annual charity horse show.

A fine job was done in telling the tale of a subject that can be difficult to explain. After all, being a Trek fan is not just admiring a person or television show, but admiring a special philosophy. What Gene Roddenberry attempted was to draw a blue-print for goodness and tolerance, and hope that it would someday be constucted. It was, and that original blueprint has been built upon time and again over the years and is continually expanding. The film shows that many levels of fandom have been created from that original blueprint. Yes, being a Trek fan means being part of a special world. There is a great deal of good that can be found beneath the costumes and make-up. Most of the time, local news coverage of cons fail to capture this. Which is precisely why a film of this nature was needed. Trekkies demonstrates that any fan at any level of involvement counts. One will also see that beneath the fun of the cons and clubs lie the hearts of real people who want to return to their communities some of what was given to them through Trek.

A great blend of humor and heart, Trekkies will surely transcend Trek fandom and provide a vehicle for the better understanding of what can truly be a better way of existence for all.

Great job.... best of luck....

Daryl....and the boys!!
